Server hacked

Server hacked

Postby julien » Sat Feb 27, 2010 5:18 pm

Dear members,

Servers were hacked today at around 6pm [GMT+1]; fortunately, I have been able to restore a backup of My Math Forum that I made after the previous software update of last week. Therefore, all files shall be just as they were before the attack.
Additionally, the database has been untouched; thus, no data loss was incurred.

The attack was due to a sophisticated java intrusion on my personal computer which allowed the hackers to retrieve some sensitive data. I took the preliminary steps to guarantee the security of the forums and of the server where they are hosted; consequently, My Math Forum should now be safe.

However, its sister forums (My Computer Forum and My Finance Forum) are still temporarily unavailable due to some security issues (the matter will probably be resolved by tomorrow). Hopefully, I can confidently say that no data loss will be incurred since I also did a full backup last week following the software update.

I apologize for the temporary inconvenience and keep working towards the resolution of any outstanding issue.

Julien

Please forgive the ignorant not-particularly-computer-literate question, but is there any chance of any members' passwords having been accessed?

Nope, no chance. Passwords are encrypted on the server. This means that even myself (the owner of the website with full access to the files) would not be able to know them since only their encrypted selves are being stored (and not the passwords themselves).

At this time, all issues have been resolved and all servers are back to normal.

I don't know if it's just me, but I don't seem to be able to see any LaTeX at the moment on the forums, or when previewing posts. Is this something to do with the server being hacked?

Thanks a bunch Mattpi, I forgot to chmod the Latex script in order to render it executable by the boards. Latex is back to normal now. Thanks again !

Actually due to a mistake of mine the sister forums are still down but should be back online within an our or so (I won't be around to check since it's already 2am over here and I need to get some sleep).
Regarding the overall situation: no data loss because I was lucky enough to have a recent backup of the files (and the database, which is the most important, was not concerned by this issue).
