Server crash

Server crash

Postby julien » Tue Mar 29, 2011 9:54 am

Hello all,

It appears that our server crashed today. I don't know exactly when, but not for too long because I checked MMF a few hours ago and it was working fine then.
The issue has been resolved a few minutes ago and might be due to our little community becoming (maybe) a little too large for such a small web server

Don't be surprised if this happens again in the coming days, and please keep me informed about it (I will see what to do, in particular maybe it will become necessary to up the specs of the server.

Thanks !
Julien

We will keep you posted. Is "julien@mmf..." (what it listed when the server was down) a good email address?

I noticed it went down between 10:00 and 10:15 am (EDT) but had to leave, and when I got back the problem was gone. I noticed the same thing a few days ago, but only for a few minutes, so I figured if it was still down when I got back today I would let you know. I only wanted to alert you if the problem persisted. :D

Thank you all for keeping me posted ...

I investigated the issue and this was due to some server maintainance that I was unaware of ...
I will monitor the server closely in the next few days in case my intervention is necessary to put the site back to work.

Notwithstanding this issue, we'll surely need a server upgrade pretty soon as our number of visitors has been increasing ...

What resource is most pressing? Bandwidth?
Pari/GP: this is the program I probably mentioned in my post. Windows users can get it at http://pari.math.u-bordeaux.fr/~bill/mingw/PARI-2-6.exe

Resources usage is uniformly increasing (which is a normal behavior, isn't it ?). While bandwidth is usually never an issue (you can always buy some more), CPU/SQL usage is a different story.
My guess is that we'll need to shift to a different server within one year ...

I wonder if there's anything that can be optimized to push the inevitable date further into the future...

There's not much to optimize, methinks. We're already using very few modifications to the original software code ...

I was thinking of something like OPTIMIZE TABLE.
