Collections of Puzzles

Postby julien » Tue Jan 30, 2007 6:49 am

Hello everybody,

Lately I chanced upon a very rich collection of old books (5000 charades, American History, Cooking, etc ...), all being exceptionally good (this is from a private collection probably).

In a few minutes (or hours, it's already 8pm here, time to cook :x) I'll make available on this site a very famous collection of old puzzles from Dudeney (The Canterbury Puzzles). You'll get the original stuff, with the original drawings and everything. I found this book very nice (even though it's all elementary, but it's meant to be for the general public) so I took the time to numerize it and hyperlink everything so that it becomes SEO-friendly. The result of optimization is a poor design, but everything has a cost !

I know there are quite a few mistakes within the pages, but well ... I'd say 95% is preserved.

Enjoy.

I confirm that the collection of puzzles has been made available under the section Puzzles and Riddles of this site. I encourage potential readers to report any broken link (don't report unmatching images, I know quite a few images couldn't go through; maybe I'll do something about it, maybe not -rather not  -).

The Canterbury Puzzles (ISBN 0486425584) and Amusements In Mathematics (ISBN 0486204731) were published a few years ago in paperback form by Dover Publications. Some of the puzzles in the second book are so hard that nobody has any idea how Dudeney solved them.

Haven't seen this second book ... I solved quite a few from another of his problems sets. I don't remember where they come from but they are featured on John Scholes' website (under the section undergraduate elementary if I remember well). I find The Canterbury Puzzles a very nice book - I must admit that the narrative part and the drawings play a big role -. Reminds me of Sam Loyd's work ...
